Tax Guide 2010 debuts today. Check it out for daily tax tips, stories, calculators, videos and general tasty tax tidbits to get you through this filing season and beyond. And yes, I am the Guide's contributing editor.
Jan. 8: Decided you don't want to hassle with your taxes this year? Then start looking for a
tax professional now, since they book up early.
Jan. 11: Does your job include
tips? If so and you received $20 in tips in December, use
Form 4070 to report them today to your employer.
Jan. 15: The IRS begins accepting e-filed returns today. Even better, you might be able to e-file at no cost if you qualify for
Free File.
Also today, your final 2009
estimated tax payment (1040-ES voucher number 4) is due today. You can skip this filing if you If you file your Form 1040 and pay any taxes due by Feb. 1.
Jan. 18: On Martin Luther King Day many people opt for a
day of service. The time you volunteer isn't deductible, but some other
costs associated with volunteering could help reduce your tax bill.
Jan. 22: Are winter winds making you painfully aware that your home's windows and doors aren't airtight? Or maybe your furnace just isn't heating like it should. You can make upgrades that will increase your comfort level and help lower your tax bill thanks to the
energy efficient home improvement tax credit.
Jan. 27: Did you sell some stock in December to rebalance your portfolio and take advantage of tax losses? If you're considering buying more of that stock or a similar one, make sure you don't violate the
